Metal Gear Solid

A few days ago I did a few articles on Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid over on my other blog. In this I mentioned a comic adaptation that retold the story of the 1999 Playstation game. As I have already summarized the story of the game here, I would like to say a few words about the comic edition of Metal Gear Solid in this short review. The main thing I love about it is the art by Ashley Wood. He is not a typical comic book artist as he does a lot of canvas art as well and his very unique style gives the Metal Gear universe a dark and highly stylized look that fits perfectly with the modern scenario. Wood’s art is always very enticing and for me he is one of the best in the genre. The images are often a bit blurry and the artist works extensively with shadows which is perfect for a protagonist who has to hide from his opponents. This comic is a great way to relieve the events of the first Metal Gear Solid game without having to play it through yet another time. Yet it is not only for fans but can also be enjoyed if you have no idea who Solid Snake is, and are just looking for an interesting comic book with an enthralling story. Kris Oprisko manages to retell Kojima’s original tale in an interesting way, keeping true to the original vision of the game designer, but also changing a few parts to make sure the flow of the story will be uninterrupted.

The story is not overly complex (this is the least complicated of all the Metal Gear stories) but has enough different characters and villains to keep the reader interested for hours. Konami has even released a digital version of this on the PSP, enhancing the art with sound effects and music. There will also be a DVD release this year, which will feature full voice acting.
